The market cap of stable coins surpasses 150 billion US Dollars. A multitude of new payment methods is flooding the market and plunges users into confusion\, since they are very different in terms of usage\, technology\, monetary policy and governance. \nWhat exactly are these differences? What distinguishes these new “currencies” from existing e-money? What are the opportunities and risks of their introduction? Which existing obstacles in the financial system do they tackle? Will they enhance financial inclusion of SMEs and citizens in the Caribbean?  Can they help to foster the Caribbean Single Market and Economy? Will they enhance financial inclusion of SMEs and citizens in the Caribbean? Why care? \nIt is estimated that by 2030 the global fintech market will be worth 700 billion US dollars.  For the Caribbean with its multitude of innovative companies in this sector\, this represents tremendous opportunities for wealth creation. Furthermore\, the whole region can benefit economically if it succeeds in lowering existing non-tariff barriers in regional trade caused by the financial system as it is. \nThe Caribbean Telecommunications Union with the support of CaribCoin and Abed Ventures will host a webinar to demystify digital money and cryptocurrencies and explore the opportunities and challenges for the region. The webinar will be open to the public but will specifically focus on key stakeholders such as central banks\, economic policy makers\, financial institutions\, technologists\, entrepreneurs and academia. \nThe key areas of focus include\, but are not limited to: \n\nTheme 1:  AWARENESSS – This theme will explain the new world of “currencies” from a conceptual\, technical and economic perspective.  Key terms such as Central Bank Digital Currencies\, crypto-currencies\, e-money and others will be explored together with the deficits of the existing financial system with the goal to reach a common understanding.\nTheme 2: OPPORTUNITIES\, RISKS AND CHALLENGES – This theme will examine the economic and social opportunities for different stakeholders including governments and the private sector.\n\nExpected Outcomes \nThe webinar will enable discussion that will assist in the formulation of policy\, legal and regulatory issues for consideration.  This will allow the relevant stakeholders to advance regional initiatives and make the necessary policy interventions in the interest of ensuring the Caribbean is poised to provide global leadership in this emerging technological space. \nKey Partners \n\nCaribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU)\nCaribCoin\nAbed Solutions\n\nVenue and Date \n\nFriday 3rd June\, 2022 – 10.00 – 11.30 AM AST\n\n\nVirtual Meeting Platform\n\nTarget Audience \n\nPolicymakers in government (economy\, finance\, technology\, diplomacy)\nTechnical Community\nICT and Financial Services Regulators\nCentral Banks and Financial Sector\nBusiness Community\nCivil Society/Public\n\n  \nREGISTER \n

SUMMARY:CTU ICT Week 2021
DESCRIPTION:OVERVIEW \nCARICOM Members States have made great strides in implementing digital platforms in response to the Covid -19 Global Pandemic\, to enable access to critical public services and to address the needs of the most vulnerable groups in society.  There have been many success stories at the national level within CARICOM Member States.  Many have implemented digital platforms for public health to manage testing and vaccination programmes.  Additionally\, systems have been implemented to facilitate the safe reopening of borders and to enable advanced notification of the health status of travellers and to facilitate the presentation of vaccination certificates to health officials. \nThis presents an opportunity for Caribbean countries to learn from each other regarding what has worked well\, and what oportunities exist to share knowledge and build capcity regionally.  This is particularly important as regional governments seek to create a travel “bubble” within CARICOM that would faciliate easy and safe movement within the Single Space. \nICT Week will focus on the theme “Regional Imperatives for Digital Transformation Post-COVID-19”\, and will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas related to how regional governments can collectively respond using digitial platforms in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. It will also go beyond a discussion on digital responses to the Pandemic and also look at ways in which ICT can help the region to bounce back with greater social and economic resilience.

SUMMARY:CMIP "Global Tech Trends" Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Caribbean Mobile Innovation Project\, coordinated by the University of the West Indies (UWI)\, cordially invites you to the Caribbean Mobile Innovation Project’s (CMIP) “Global Tech Trends” Webinar on Thursday\, February 26\, 2015 from 1:30 to 2:30 pm EST. The speaker will be Mr. Soji Ojugbele\, Product Specialist with Android Wear at Google Inc. Soji has been involved with wearables for 2 years now\, starting with the launch of Google Glass. He now works on the Android Wear team at Google\, evangelizing the products\, providing useful demonstrations and supporting the platform. \nThe CMIP is an integral part of the Entrepreneurship Program for Innovation in the Caribbean (EPIC )\, a US $20M program funded by the Government of Canada and executed by infoDev/World Bank. The CMIP is thrilled to welcome Soji as this webinar falls in line with its mandate to strengthen the Caribbean mobile innovation ecosystem. \nAs stakeholders in this ecosystem\, we should all be keenly aware of tech trends representing intelligence on the edge\, to ensure we capacitate ourselves to allow innovation to flourish. Soji’s webinar will aid in keeping you at the forefront of today’s paradigm of innovative technology trends. \nA major aspect of strengthening the Caribbean mobile innovation ecosystem is ensuring all players have a pulse of the nature of activity taking place in the region. This will reduce the probability of duplication of efforts and will allow for the strengthening of connections between the members of the ecosystem\, fostering greater sustainability of the community. To this end\, the webinar is being staged to both share knowledge critical to those who are committed to remaining on the edge of innovation and bring together key players to foster the growth of the ecosystem. A key tool is being developed by the CMIP to map the ecosystem. \nThe main objective for the development of this tool is to provide crowd-sourced information to foster interaction and development of the mobile innovation ecosystem\, especially among CARICOM members. The map will represent an interactive data visualization of the full universe of Caribbean mobile innovation stakeholders\, and as such will undoubtedly become a useful reference. \n  \nThe agenda for the Feb 26\, 2015 Global Tech Trends webinar is as follows: \n1:30 – 1:35 pm  –  Introduction and putting the Webinar in context – Ayanna Samuels \n1:35 – 2:05 pm  –  Today’s Global Tech Trends                                       – Soji Ojugbele \n2:05 – 2:20 pm  –  Wrap up and Forward Charge/Next Steps             – Angelique Mannella \n2:20 – 2:30 pm  –  Questions \n  \nWe’d be delighted if you would join us to help to move the Caribbean mobile innovation space forward. Please register at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/cmip-global-tech-trends-webinar-tickets-15765656503 by Tue Feb 24\, 2015. The URL for the webinar will be shared in reminder notifications.
