Jamaica’s Data Protection Act will be coming into effect on 1 December 2023, but myths and misconceptions have persisted. With Grace Lindo, an attorney at law at Carter Lindo in Jamaica, we tackle some of the misconceptions along with exploring compliance in a variety of different scenarios. Among other things, Grace also discusses the potential implications and obligations under the new dispensation: when using certain technologies and platforms, such as WhatsApp, Artificial Intelligence and ChatGPT in the workplace; in the ethical use of data, particularly for research; in direct marketing; and when data breaches occur.

Although artificial intelligence (AI) has begun to transform the workplace, it has the potential to have an even greater impact on our societies by helping us address many of the development challenges that countries, such as those in the Caribbean region, need to address. Eldon Marks, of V75 Inc. and TrueSelph Inc. in Guyana, is back with us again to share his thoughts on, among other things: how AI has evolved since our first conversation in 2019; why Caribbean countries are not part of the global AI conversation; ways in which Caribbean countries can capitalise on AI4D; and what is needed for Guyana to become a powerhouse in AI, or more broadly, tech.

Thanks to the growing prominence of Artificial intelligence (AI), .ai, the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Anguilla has experienced an exponential increase in the take-up of .ai domains. However, Caribbean countries have not been aggressive in increasing the take-up and use of their ccTLDs, though there are numerous opportunities to be had. With longstanding players in the global Internet Governance space, Lance Hinds and Carlton Samuels, we discuss: the benefits of using ccTLDs; why some countries enjoy a large number of active ccTLDs; reasons why Caribbean countries have not sought to foster greater use of their ccTLDs; and ways in which Caribbean countries can increase the attractiveness and consequently the value of their ccTLDs.
